The Registration Window Is Not Your Insurance Window
You moved to Idaho last month. Your out-of-state plates are still valid. The DMV website says you have 90 days to register your vehicles. You assume your current insurance policy covers you for those 90 days while you settle in.
That assumption creates a compliance gap. Idaho law requires you to carry Idaho-compliant liability insurance the moment you establish residency, not 90 days later. The 90-day registration window and the immediate insurance requirement are separate obligations. Mixing them up leaves you uninsured under Idaho law even though your out-of-state policy is still active.

$25,000 / $50,000 / $15,000
Idaho requires $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $15,000 property damage. Your out-of-state policy must meet or exceed these minimums to satisfy Idaho compliance the day you become a resident.
Idaho Code Title 49 ch. 12
What Establishes Residency in Idaho
Idaho considers you a resident when you take actions that demonstrate intent to stay: registering to vote, enrolling children in school, accepting employment, leasing or purchasing a home, or spending more than six consecutive months in the state. You do not choose a residency date. The state determines it based on your behavior.
The insurance obligation begins the day residency is established, not the day you register your vehicle or transfer your license. If you leased an apartment on August 1 and started a job on August 5, Idaho considers you a resident by early August. Your insurance must comply with Idaho minimums by that date.
Your out-of-state policy may already meet Idaho minimums. Many states require higher liability limits than Idaho. If your current policy carries at least $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, and $15,000 property damage, you are compliant. If your limits are lower, you must increase them immediately.
The 90-day vehicle registration window does not extend your insurance compliance deadline. Coverage must meet Idaho minimums the day you establish residency.
Registration and License Transfer Deadlines

Vehicle registration must occur within 90 days of establishing residency. You bring your out-of-state title, proof of Idaho insurance, and pay registration fees at your county assessor's office. The 90-day clock starts the day you become a resident, not the day you arrive in Idaho. If you established residency on September 1, your registration deadline is November 30.
Driver license transfer must occur within 90 days of establishing residency. You surrender your out-of-state license, pass a vision test, and receive an Idaho license at any DMV office. Idaho does not require a written or road test for drivers with a valid out-of-state license. The 90-day window runs concurrently with the vehicle registration window.
How to Update Your Insurance for Idaho Compliance
Call your current carrier the week you establish residency. Ask whether your policy meets Idaho minimum liability limits. If it does, request a policy update reflecting your new Idaho address and garaging location. If your limits are lower than Idaho minimums, increase them immediately. Most carriers process address and coverage changes within one business day.
If your current carrier does not write policies in Idaho, you must switch carriers. Idaho has 19 major carriers writing auto insurance in the state, including Allstate, American Family, Farmers, Geico, Progressive, State Farm, and USAA. Compare quotes from carriers that write Idaho policies and bind coverage before your residency date if possible. A gap in coverage between your out-of-state policy cancellation and your Idaho policy effective date creates a compliance violation.
When you register your vehicle, the county assessor will ask for proof of insurance. Bring your Idaho policy declarations page or an insurance ID card showing Idaho coverage. The assessor will not accept an out-of-state policy, even if it meets Idaho minimums. The policy must list Idaho as the garaging state and show your Idaho address.
Major Insurers Writing Idaho Policies
19 carriers
Idaho has a competitive auto insurance market with 19 major carriers writing standard and non-standard policies. Switching carriers when you move to Idaho typically takes two to five business days from quote to binding.
Consequences of Missing the Insurance Deadline
Driving without Idaho-compliant insurance after you establish residency is a misdemeanor. If stopped, you face a fine, potential vehicle impoundment, and a requirement to file an SR-22 certificate of insurance for three years. The SR-22 filing adds cost and administrative burden to your policy.
If you cause an accident while uninsured or underinsured under Idaho law, you are personally liable for damages up to the state minimum limits. Idaho is a tort state. The injured party can sue you directly for medical bills, lost wages, and property damage. Your out-of-state policy may deny the claim if it does not meet Idaho requirements.
Compare Idaho Carriers Before You Move
Request Idaho quotes two weeks before your move. Provide your new Idaho address, your vehicle VIN, and your current coverage levels. Carriers price Idaho policies based on your garaging ZIP code, driving history, and vehicle. Rates vary significantly by location within Idaho. A policy in Boise prices differently than a policy in Coeur d'Alene.
Bind your Idaho policy with an effective date matching your residency date. If you close on a home purchase on October 15, set your Idaho policy effective date for October 15. Cancel your out-of-state policy the same day to avoid paying for two policies. Most carriers allow you to bind coverage up to 30 days in advance.
