The Notice Arrives Before the Suspension

Idaho's Transportation Department sends a notice when your insurer reports a policy cancellation or lapse and ITD's system cannot match continuous replacement coverage to your registered vehicle. The notice gives you a specific number of days to submit proof that coverage never actually lapsed — either because you switched carriers on the same day, because the cancellation was an error, or because you sold or stored the vehicle and it no longer required coverage. If you do not respond within that window, the registration suspension takes effect automatically.

The suspension is not triggered by a traffic stop or a ticket. It is an administrative action under Idaho Code Title 49 chapter 12, enforced by ITD's Division of Motor Vehicles. Once the suspension is in effect, driving the vehicle is illegal even if you purchase insurance the next day. The registration must be reinstated through ITD before the vehicle can legally return to the road, and reinstatement requires proof of current insurance, payment of the reinstatement fee, and in most cases an SR-22 filing for one year.

The response window in the ITD notice is the only opportunity to prove continuous coverage and stop the suspension before it takes effect.

Idaho Minimum Liability Limits

$25,000/$50,000/$15,000

Idaho requires $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 bodily injury per accident, and $15,000 property damage. Driving without at least this coverage triggers the administrative suspension process when ITD receives a lapse report from your insurer.

What ITD Considers Proof of Continuous Coverage

ITD will cancel the suspension if you prove that coverage never lapsed. Acceptable proof includes an SR-22 certificate or insurance ID card showing an effective date on or before the prior policy's cancellation date, a letter from the new carrier confirming the overlap, or documentation that the vehicle was sold, totaled, or placed in storage and no longer required coverage during the gap period.

The proof must be submitted to ITD DMV Operations in Boise within the response window stated in the notice. If the notice allows 15 days and you submit proof on day 16, the suspension stands. ITD does not extend the deadline for mail delays or for time spent shopping for new coverage. The clock starts when the notice is mailed, not when you open it.

If you cannot prove continuous coverage because a genuine lapse occurred — even a lapse of one day — the suspension cannot be avoided by retroactive proof. Purchasing insurance today does not undo a lapse that occurred last month. The suspension will proceed, and reinstatement will require current proof of insurance plus the SR-22 filing.

The response window in the ITD notice is the only opportunity to prove continuous coverage and stop the suspension before it takes effect.

How to Submit Proof and Stop the Suspension

If you have proof that coverage never lapsed, submit it to ITD immediately. The submission must include specific documentation and must arrive within the notice's stated deadline.

Gather an SR-22 certificate or insurance ID card from the new carrier showing an effective date on or before the prior policy's cancellation date. If the new policy started the same day the old one ended, that overlap is sufficient. If you sold the vehicle, provide the bill of sale and a signed statement that the vehicle was not driven after the sale date. If the vehicle was totaled, provide the insurance settlement letter and a statement that the vehicle was not driven after the loss date. If the vehicle was placed in storage, provide a notarized affidavit stating the vehicle was not driven and was stored at a specific address during the gap period.

Mail or deliver the proof to ITD DMV Operations, PO Box 7129, Boise ID 83707-1129. Include your name, driver license number, vehicle identification number, and the notice reference number if one appears on the suspension notice. If submitting by mail, send it certified with return receipt so you have proof of the submission date. If the notice deadline is tight, deliver the proof in person to the Boise office or to your local county DMV office, which will forward it to ITD Operations. Keep a copy of everything you submit.

What Happens If the Suspension Takes Effect

If you do not submit proof within the notice window, or if ITD determines that a lapse did occur, the registration suspension takes effect for a period of 365 to 1,095 days depending on the circumstances. Driving the vehicle during the suspension is a misdemeanor. Law enforcement can impound the vehicle if you are stopped, and the impound fees and towing costs are your responsibility.

To reinstate the registration after the suspension period, you must submit proof of current liability insurance meeting Idaho's minimum limits, file an SR-22 certificate with ITD, and pay the $85 reinstatement fee. The SR-22 filing is required for one year from the reinstatement date. If the SR-22 lapses or is cancelled during that year, ITD will suspend the registration again, and the one-year SR-22 period restarts from the date of the new reinstatement.

The reinstatement fee is separate from any fines or penalties imposed by a court if you were cited for driving without insurance. The $85 fee is ITD's administrative charge for processing the reinstatement. It does not reduce or replace any court-ordered penalties.

Idaho Registration Reinstatement Fee

$85

After a registration suspension for uninsured driving, Idaho charges an $85 reinstatement fee in addition to requiring proof of current insurance and an SR-22 filing for one year. The fee is paid to ITD when you apply to reinstate the registration.

SR-22 Filing After Reinstatement

The SR-22 is a certificate your insurer files electronically with ITD confirming that you carry at least Idaho's minimum liability limits. Not all carriers file SR-22 certificates. If your current carrier does not offer SR-22 filing, you will need to switch to a carrier that does before ITD will process your reinstatement application. Carriers writing SR-22 policies in Idaho include Geico, Progressive, State Farm, USAA, Farmers, National General, The General, Dairyland, Bristol West, and GAINSCO.

The SR-22 filing itself carries no state fee — Idaho does not charge a separate SR-22 processing fee — but the carrier may charge a one-time filing fee, and the premium for SR-22 coverage is typically higher than standard coverage because the filing signals higher risk to the insurer. The SR-22 must remain on file with ITD for one year from the reinstatement date. If you cancel the policy or switch to a carrier that does not file SR-22, the new carrier or the old carrier will notify ITD of the lapse, and ITD will suspend your registration again.

Compare Carriers That File SR-22 in Idaho

If you are facing reinstatement and need SR-22 coverage, compare quotes from multiple carriers that file SR-22 in Idaho. Rates vary significantly by carrier, and the carrier that offered the lowest rate before the suspension may not be the lowest-cost option for SR-22 coverage. Request quotes from at least three carriers and confirm that each quote includes SR-22 filing as part of the policy. Once you select a carrier and purchase the policy, the carrier will file the SR-22 electronically with ITD, typically within one to three business days. You can then submit the SR-22 confirmation, proof of current coverage, and the $85 reinstatement fee to ITD to complete the reinstatement process.
