When Payment Alone Does Not Restore Your License
You cannot pay the Idaho reinstatement fee until you satisfy every requirement the Idaho Transportation Department listed in your suspension notice. Most drivers discover this when they attempt to pay online and ITD's system rejects the transaction because underlying conditions remain unmet.
Idaho operates a multi-tier suspension structure. Administrative suspensions under Idaho Code 18-8002A carry different requirements than point-based suspensions under 49-326. The fee you owe, the documentation ITD requires, and the timeline for reinstatement all depend on which suspension type triggered your notice. Payment is accepted only after you resolve the trigger.

Additional fees may apply depending on the suspension type and whether you need SR-22 filing. ITD collects the fee only after you satisfy all underlying requirements.

What ITD Requires Before Accepting Payment
The Idaho Transportation Department will not process your reinstatement fee until you submit proof that you satisfied the suspension trigger. For an administrative suspension under 18-8002A, you must complete the suspension period, provide proof of liability insurance meeting Idaho's $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident / $15,000 property damage minimums, and file SR-22 if the notice requires it. For a points-based suspension under 49-326, you must complete the suspension period and may need to retake the written or driving exam depending on the points total.
Most drivers suspended for DUI or driving without insurance must file SR-22 for three years before ITD will accept the reinstatement fee. The SR-22 is a certificate your insurer files directly with ITD proving you carry continuous liability coverage. You cannot file SR-22 yourself. Only after ITD receives and processes the SR-22 can you pay the reinstatement fee.
If your suspension notice lists multiple violations, you must resolve all of them before ITD will accept payment. A single unresolved ticket, unpaid fine, or missing SR-22 filing blocks the entire reinstatement process. Check your suspension notice for the complete list of requirements. If the notice is unclear, call ITD Driver Services at (208) 334-8736 before attempting payment.
ITD's online payment system rejects transactions when underlying requirements remain unmet. Attempting payment before you satisfy the suspension trigger wastes time and does not advance your reinstatement timeline.
How to Pay the Reinstatement Fee After You Satisfy Requirements

Online payment through ITD's driver services portal is the fastest method. Log in with your driver's license number and the last four digits of your Social Security number. The system displays your reinstatement eligibility status and the exact fee you owe. If the system shows you are eligible, you can pay immediately with a debit or credit card. ITD processes online payments within one business day. You receive a confirmation email with a receipt and your reinstatement date.
Mail payment takes longer. ITD processes mailed payments within five to seven business days after receipt. Do not mail cash. If you need confirmation that ITD received your payment, send the check via certified mail with return receipt requested.
What Happens After You Pay
ITD restores your driving privileges the same day it processes your reinstatement fee, provided you satisfied all underlying requirements. You do not receive a new physical license. Your existing license becomes valid again. You can verify reinstatement status online through ITD's driver services portal or by calling (208) 334-8736.
If your suspension required SR-22 filing, your three-year SR-22 period begins the day ITD receives the certificate from your carrier, not the day you pay the reinstatement fee. You must maintain continuous liability coverage for the entire three-year period. If your policy lapses or cancels, your carrier notifies ITD electronically, and ITD suspends your license again immediately. The second suspension triggers a new reinstatement process with a new fee.
Some drivers need a Restricted Driving Permit while their suspension is active. Idaho's RDP allows limited driving to work, school, medical appointments, and treatment during the suspension period. The RDP costs $60 and requires separate application through ITD using Form ITD-3227. The RDP fee is separate from the reinstatement fee. You pay both if you want restricted driving during suspension and full reinstatement afterward.
Idaho SR-22 Filing Period
3 years
Idaho requires SR-22 filing for three years after a DUI conviction or driving without insurance. The period begins when ITD receives the SR-22 certificate from your carrier, not when you pay the reinstatement fee. A lapse in coverage restarts the clock.

Common Payment Failures and How to Avoid Them
The most common payment failure is attempting to pay before ITD receives your SR-22 filing. Carriers transmit SR-22 certificates electronically, but processing time varies. Some carriers file within 24 hours; others take three to five business days. Call ITD at (208) 334-8736 to confirm they received your SR-22 before you attempt to pay the reinstatement fee. If ITD has not processed the SR-22, your payment will be rejected.
Another common failure is paying the wrong amount. Check your suspension notice for the exact amount ITD requires. Underpayment delays reinstatement; overpayment requires a refund request that adds weeks to the process.
Compare Carriers That Write SR-22 in Idaho
If your reinstatement requires SR-22 filing, you need a carrier licensed to write SR-22 in Idaho. Not all carriers offer SR-22 policies, and filing fees vary. Geico, Progressive, State Farm, Dairyland, The General, Bristol West, National General, GAINSCO, USAA, and Farmers all write SR-22 in Idaho. Compare quotes from at least three carriers before you buy. The carrier you choose files the SR-22 directly with ITD after you purchase the policy. Once ITD processes the SR-22, you can pay the reinstatement fee and restore your license.
